It is crucial to recognize that children have unique needs. After all, they are not miniature adults. This requires a specific approach to minimize the impact of such events on their lives.
In practice, we often see a focus on long-term psychological support, which typically involves common issues such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and regression. However, the acute phase of care during the immediately aftermath of the event is equally important. Immediate support provides a foundation for the natural processing of the event and can prevent later complications. Parents and other adults can be equally affected by the event, highlighting the necessity for timely and appropriate support. Acting quickly can help manage the initial shock and pave the way for potential future support.
This masterclass is designed for caregivers, first responders and educators, to prepare them to provide immediate and effective support when children are most vulnerable.

Erik de Soir is a Doctor in Psychology (University of Utrecht) and a Doctor in Social and Military Sciences (Royal Military School). In 1998, he founded Crisis & Conflict Counseling, and in 2010, De Weg Wijzer – Center for Trauma and Bereavement Counseling (in Leopoldsburg - Belgium). He also teaches crisis psychology, crisis communication, and crisis management at universities domestically and internationally.
This masterclass focuses on strengthening resilience in children through effective care techniques and principles in the acute phase after a traumatic event.
It will cover how to apply initial psychological aid to promote the normal processing of a shocking event. It is important for the child to experience safety and security, share and understand their experience in an age-appropriate manner, and learn to recognize and understand normal reactions to abnormal events. The child's natural social support system can be activated by engaging trusted figures from the child's environment. Informing and involving the school and other relevant institutions is also crucial.
